What a forklift operator does

Forklift operators load and unload trucks, move pallets around the warehouse and put products away on high racks. It's one of the best-paid entry-level warehouse skills, and California's distribution centers, ports, factories and building supply yards all need operators.

Types of forklifts

  • Sit-down counterbalance: the classic forklift, used for loading trucks.
  • Stand-up and reach trucks: narrow aisles and high racks in large warehouses.
  • Order pickers: lift the operator up to pick items from high shelves.
  • Electric pallet jacks: move pallets across the floor and onto trucks.

Forklift certification in California

There's no state forklift license. Instead, Cal/OSHA requires your employer to train you and evaluate how you drive before you operate a forklift on the job (California Code of Regulations, title 8, section 3668). Training covers the specific truck you'll use and the conditions at that workplace, and your skills must be re-evaluated at least every three years, or sooner after an accident or unsafe driving.

That means a certificate from one job or school helps you get hired, but each new employer still trains and evaluates you on their equipment. Be careful with websites that promise an online-only "forklift license."

Skills employers look for

  • Safe, smooth driving and careful load handling.
  • Checking the forklift before each shift.
  • Awareness of people walking nearby.
  • Using a scanner to record where pallets go.

How to get hired

  1. If you're new, start as a warehouse associate and ask for forklift training. Many employers train from within.
  2. List each type of truck you can operate (sit-down, reach, order picker, pallet jack).
  3. Mention your safety record. No accidents is a selling point.
  4. Staffing agencies often place experienced operators quickly.

Questions people ask

How long does forklift training take?

Basic training often takes a day or less, plus a driving evaluation. Becoming fast and confident takes practice.

Does my certificate transfer to a new job?

It shows experience, but your new employer must still train and evaluate you on its own equipment and site.

Your pay and breaks in California

  • Minimum wage: the statewide minimum is $16.90 an hour in 2026, and many cities set a higher local minimum. Some healthcare employers have their own, higher minimum wage schedule.
  • Overtime: most hourly workers earn 1.5 times their pay after 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week, and double pay after 12 hours in a day.
  • Breaks: a 30-minute meal break when you work more than 5 hours, and a paid 10-minute rest break for every 4 hours worked (or major part of 4 hours).
  • Pay in job posts: employers with 15 or more workers must include a pay range in their job posts, so check the listing before you apply.
